Data that resides in Microsoft 365 applications hinges on a shared responsibility model. Microsoft illustrates this shared responsibility model by comparing it to driving a car. In this analogy, for example, it is the vehicle manufacturer’s responsibility to ensure that the car has working brakes. However, it is the driver’s responsibility to use those brakes to avoid a collision. The same basic concept applies to the Microsoft 365 cloud: Microsoft is responsible for keeping its cloud functional. Its subscribers are responsible for protecting the data that they create within the Microsoft 365 cloud
