The Globus service helps researchers to overcome many obstacles in managing research data. With a Globus standard subscription researchers can take advantage of high-performance file transfer at scale and easily access, collaborate and share data with others, in or across institutions. The Standard level includes unlimited file transfer, unlimited managed endpoints, HTTPS data access and direct downloads, management console access, usage reports, the ability to create shared endpoints and transfer files between personal computers.
Many regulations surround protected data, and secure data storage and sharing are an essential part of the rules. Balancing security and usability, the Globus High Assurance Subscription allows use of Globus with data that require additional protection, including Personally Identifiable Information (PII), Protected Health Information (PHI), and controlled but unclassified data. Globus will ensure that stricter access policies with higher levels of assurance, as required by the institution, are enforced. Subscribers also have access to comprehensive documentation describing Globus operations and processes for compliance with NIST 800-53 and NIST 800-171. High Assurance subscriptions currently apply to Globus file transfer and sharing functionality, and their underlying platform services such as Globus Auth.
Some institutions need to store and share Protected Health Information (PHI) data, and may identify storage systems with sensitive data that require additional levels of protection. Globus will ensure that stricter access policies, as required by the institution, are enforced. The Globus service balances the need to both collaborate, while supporting the regulations which surround PHI. A Globus BAA Subscription includes the security features of a High Assurance Subscription, together with a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) with the University of Chicago that states that Globus appropriately safeguards PHI and HIPAA-protected data. Subscribers also have access to comprehensive documentation describing Globus operations and processes for compliance with HIPAA and NIST 800-171. High Assurance and HIPAA subscriptions currently apply to Globus file transfer and sharing functionality, and their underlying platform services such as Globus Auth.
Organizations with enterprise Google Drive accounts can easily access, transfer and share their data in Google Drive via Globus, the same familiar interface used to access other storage systems. This connector requires a Standard, High Assurance, or BAA Subscription.
As the volume, velocity and variety of data continues to grow, effective research data management is critical. For larger datasets, researchers can use the Globus for Google Cloud Storage connector to manage research data in Google Cloud Storage with their existing enterprise identity via a web browser, the Globus Command Line interface, or Globus platform APIs. This connector requires a Standard, High Assurance, or BAA Subscription.
