Trust Aireon Aircraft Tracking Data To Enhance Intelligence Analysis

Aireon’s space-based aircraft surveillance service delivers mission-critical, aircraft-derived information — including identity, GPS position, altitude and more. This global and persistent service tracks cooperative aircraft simultaneously from the surface to space to enable a real-time picture of 150,000-200,000 aircraft movements per day. Collected by payloads hosted on the Iridium satellite constellation with capability to deliver data in real-time, it provides surveillance and intelligence operations with an unprecedented layer of reliability, security, and flexibility, anywhere on the globe.

Since becoming operational in 2019, the Aireon system has generated an archive of location and position data of all ADS-B equipped aircraft worldwide. Scalable to any need, Aireon’s data-as-a-service subscription offerings include real-time reporting to enhance track quality, custody, and identification; while improving anomaly detection with historical data sets available to assist pattern-of-life analysis.

Aireon’s space-based surveillance offers unique insights beyond typical plane tracking services. Assessment of GPS quality is a data field inherent in every ADS-B message, allowing analysts to leverage each target Aireon tracks as a sensor for indications of potential GPS interference. Additionally, Aireon develops a Time Difference of Arrival-aided reference track that validates reported aircraft positions, and can enable alerts for possible GPS and position spoofing events.

Key to the value of Aireon’s Space-based ADS-B surveillance data is the safety pedigree of Aireon and its system. The European Union Aviation Safety Administration (EASA) certification and oversight demonstrates Aireon’s technical knowledge and competency in providing surveillance as a service for safe operational use by the global aviation community. Currently, Aireon’s customer base consists of 21 Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs), representing 41 countries, and more than 15 commercial entities that rely on Aireon to provide an authoritative source of truth for data analytics.
