Today's schools face a plethora of challenges when it comes to cybersecurity: they are prime targets for hackers, they lack the resources available to large corporate organizations, and they must secure a widely distributed network of onsite, mobile, and remote users.
School districts are now operating more than any time before and are highly dependent on IT resources to perform their functions. These resources have mostly migrated to the cloud, removing the protections the four walls of the data center once offered, and are compounded by the requirement to provide 24/7 access and interaction with these resources; from instruction (the classroom/virtual) to business operations to transportation and beyond – in an environment where users (students and employees) are mobile, it's critical to secure your network to prevent cyber threats.
This roundtable covered three key components, which contribute to a comprehensive and proactive district wide cybersecurity strategy school leaders on the panel have or are undertaking, including:
- Cybersecurity as a cross organizational priority
- Developing and executing a comprehensive assessment of operational vulnerabilities
- Ongoing proactiveness
