FNN Expert Edition: Cyber of the Future
- DARPA’s Perri Adams on evolving the use of AI to secure cyberspace
- ONCD’s Nick Leiserson on taking dynamic approach to implementing National Cybersecurity Strategy
- DHS’ Donald Coulter and Ann Cox, along with NIST’s Dustin Moody, on pushing cyber boundaries
As agency cyber teams focus intently on
bolstering their current infrastructures and
thwarting attacks happening every day,
the government’s cybersecurity leaders realize they must also
think beyond today — or even next week.
“As we’re nose to the grindstone right now, working to implement
the 69 initiatives [in the National Cybersecurity Strategy], we’re
also looking over the horizon a bit to see what’s going to be
coming in Implementation Plan 2.0, which we expect to be out in
the spring of next year,” said Nick Leiserson, assistant national
cyber director for cyber policy and programs in the White House
Office of the National Cyber Director. (Read the full story about
ONCD’s forward-leaning focus on Page 10.)
And ONCD is not alone in planning ahead, as we found out during
our 2023 Cyber Leaders Exchange while talking to industry
experts as well as research leaders from the Defense Advanced
Research Projects Agency, Homeland Security Department and
National Institute of Standards and Technology.
“Nobody knows what’s coming next. But there’s a lot of steps
we can take today to plan for what may be next and to protect
data into the future,” said Brian O’Donnell, vice president of sales
for Carahsoft, which was the presenting sponsor of this year’s
exchange. “That’s why we spend a lot of time working with our
vendors, understanding the direction they’re taking, understanding
those future threats.”
